Launched in 2010, Maharajas Express was operated by Royale India Tour Ltd (RIRTL) a joint venture between Cox and Kings, India and Indian Rail Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). Now the train will be run by IRCTC alone and offer shorter itineraries at more affordable price in addition to the pre-existing itineraries. According to the officials the tariff of the Maharajas Express may come down by as much as US $ 10,000 for the new itineraries with shorter duration.

Maharajas Express, with its 23 guest carriages has a total capacity of 88 passengers which include a Presidential Suite build over an entire carriage, a unique feature in any train in the world.
