The Golden Chariot Train: A Wildlife Detour


Pride of the South is one of the two voyages offered by the Golden Chariot, a renowned luxury train in India. Operated by Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation in collaboration with India Railways, Pride of the South itinerary offers an ecstatic week-long journey across some enchanting destinations in Karnataka and also includes a halt in sun and sand paradise, Goa.

The journey spanning over 7 nights and 8 days takes you to the choicest destinations across South India which includes a visit to the ‘Garden City’ Bangalore, wildlife reserve of Kabini/Bandipur, Mysore, ancient temples of Halebid and Belur, World Heritage Sites of Hampi and Badami and sun-kissed beaches of Goa.

The train is designed to replicate the art and culture of the various dynasties who ruled the South Indian princely states in the days of yore. The Golden Chariot name itself is inspired from the Stone Chariot at the World Heritage Site of Hampi. The interiors of the trains are inspired by the architecture of the Hoysala and Mysore tradition in an endeavor to recreate the aura of an erstwhile period.

Besides the quaint décor infused in the cabins of the Golden Chariot, modern amenities and gracious hospitality add up to an experience of sheer opulence and pampering. During the course of a weeklong itinerary the train covers several major destinations in Karnataka. One of the major destinations included in the Pride of the South itinerary on board the Golden Chariot is the wildlife sanctuary of Bandipur. The journey on board Golden Chariot train enters the wildlife environs of Kabini/Bandipur on the 2nd day of this journey.

Bandipur is a renowned National Park in India situated in the Chamarajanagar district of   Karnataka. The park along with the adjoining Nagarhole National Park, Mudumalai National Park and Wynad wildlife sanctuary is a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. Bandipur was the private hunting ground of erstwhile maharajas of Mysore and was brought under project tiger in 1973.

The Bandipur National Park is home to around 70 Bengal tigers, 3,000 Indian Elephants and over 300 species of birds. The park also houses some rare species of timber and bamboo which includes Teak, Rosewood and Sandalwood. Apart from rich flora and fauna, Bandipur wildlife sanctuary also offers scenic views of towering Western Ghat Mountains.
